This project is to recognize the sacrifice and further honor these two Medal of Honor recipients at the Heroes Memorial at the Seminole County Courthouse. Since the Vietnam War, thirty Congressional Medals of Honor have been awarded to American heroes, and two of these heroes are accredited to
Seminole County, Florida.
I am raising funds to create bronze markers for each of these soldiers to be mounted at the Heroes Memorial. The Seminole County Board of County Commissioners is supportive of this project and I am working with the county and with the Cashe and Miller families to ensure the project properly honors each of them.
"Sergeant First Class Alwyn C. Cashe distinguished himself by acts of gallantry above and beyond the call of duty while serving as Platoon Sergeant with Company A, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division in Salah Ad Din Province, Iraq, on October 17th, 2005."
SFC Cashe served in the United States Army from 1988 until his passing in 2005 from actions during Operation Iraqi Freedom. During a night patrol, SFC Cashe’s Bradley Fighting Vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device, which then engulfed in flames. After extracting himself, SFC Cashe went on to rescue the driver and other soldiers from the burning vehicle. SFC Cashe was also suffering from severe burns all along his body because his fuel-soaked uniform was on fire.
"Despite the severe second-and third-degree burns covering the majority of his body, Sergeant First Class Cashe persevered through the pain to encourage his fellow soldiers and ensure they received needed medical care. When medical evacuation helicopters began to arrive, Sergeant First Class Cashe selflessly refused evacuation until all of the other wounded soldiers were evacuated first."
SFC Cashe was evacuated but ultimately died from these injuries on November 8, 2005. SFC Cashe's family was presented the Congressional Medal of Honor in a White House ceremony on December 16, 2021.
SFC Cashe is buried in Restlawn Cemetery, Sanford.

"Staff Sergeant Robert J. Miller distinguished himself by extraordinary acts of heroism while serving as the Weapons Sergeant in Special Forces Operational Detachment Alpha 3312, Special Operations Task Force-33, Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force-Afghanistan during combat operations against an armed enemy in Konar Province, Afghanistan on January 25, 2008."
SSG Miller served in the United States Army from 2003 until his passing in 2008 during Operation Enduring Freedom. SSG Miller was conducting a reconnaissance patrol when he and his fellow American and Afghan soldiers were unexpectedly attacked by a Taliban Force .
"Nonetheless, with total disregard for his own safety, he called for his men to quickly move back to covered positions as he charged the enemy over exposed ground and under overwhelming enemy fire in order to provide protective fire for his team. While maneuvering to engage the enemy, Staff Sergeant Miller was shot in his upper torso. Ignoring the wound, he continued to push the fight, moving to draw fire from over one hundred enemy fighters upon himself. He then again charged forward through an open area in order to allow his teammates to safely reach cover."
SSG Miller was mortally wounded, but saved his team of seven Americans and fifteen Afghan soldiers. SSG Miller's family was presented the Congressional Medal of Honor in a White House ceremony on October 6, 2010.
SSG Miller is buried in All Faiths Memorial Park, Casselberry.
